I am lucky to live in Jerusalem, with its very special light and its spiritual atmosphere. The ancient buildings and rocky landscape are severe rather than pretty, and somewhat monochromatic. The harsh sun can often ‘white out‘ any color. The Cyprus trees are dark and dusty. However in the early morning and late afternoon the soft light turns everything into a magical and mythical cityscape, and Jerusalem is inspirational. It is a privilege to live here.
And the desert is just minutes away.
I enjoy painting in the desert as it puts our puny concerns into perspective. The grandeur, the breadth, the wild timelessness fill me with awe. Often the colors and contours resemble the female nude. It is indeed a primal landscape.
